After a long winter break in taking photos (aviation), at the end of April, together with the team from EPKS Spotters, I visited the 31st Tactical Air Base in Krzesiny. A one-day trip was initially threatened by not very good weather forecasts, but eventually it become one of the best days spent in the base.
The weather was great in the morning, the beautiful sun, clouds and light wind made the pictures look great (although the “thermals” appeared quickly). After the morning series of take offs and landings, we took a break preparing for the second flight series and the planned Tiger Demo Team training. Around 14.00, shortly after taking place near runway, the beautiful weather was replaced by a rain, or rather the tearing of the clouds. I can honestly say that the only thing that was dry (as far as) was the covered equipment covered, because even the shoes we had full of water.
Despite the diametric deterioration of the weather, we managed to take great photos of wet-runway take offs and degrade hearing due to afterburns 🙂 Unfortunately, the Tiger Demo Team training was not organized because further weather forecasts were getting worse, which would only make training difficult. Nevertheless, I managed to make a lot of great photos. The variable weather also had one significant plus – I could test a new lens – Sigma 150-600 Sport. Although I bought it at the end of last year, the first tests were not very successful, because the conditions for taking photos were very bad – it was usually too dark to determine the actual quality.
Pictures in the sun and even in the rain, however, allowed to fully check the possibilities of this lens. Although in combination with the body, it holds about 4 kg (much more than in the case of Canon 100-400), the quality and above all focal length compensate for fatigue. Of course, as befits the lens of this class, it is quite dark (the optimal aperture is f/8), so you have to be careful with the ISO so that it does not go to high. In terms of sharpness, even at 600 mm it is a very good lens that I am sure it’ll serve me long, especially since this year’s season is rich in interesting and unusual events – from NATO Tiger Meet and Poznań Air Show in May, through numerous smaller events, up to the Gdynia Air Show and Radom Air Show in August.
